The first Spanish settlement on Cuba occupies its isolated Eastern tip, backed by extensive forests and surrounded by high cliffs. It is home to several barracks, but few soldiers, and, despite its deep-water harbour and strategically important position near the Windward Passage, there is precious little military activity in the town itself.
